SLAM JAM is a fully washed lot produced by smallholder farmers in Papua New Guinea’s Eastern Highlands, where coffee is cultivated in traditional “coffee gardens” across small one-to-two hectare plots. Grown in the remote Virgin Mountain region surrounding the Nori Kori Valley, this coffee reflects the collaborative farming traditions of the Kamano/Kafe and Gadzup communities.
Coffee trees are commonly inter-planted with shade species such as Casuarina and Albizia along fertile mountain slopes and forest fringes. Following Papua New Guinea’s independence in 1975, many larger plantations were divided into smaller holdings, now maintained through family-run farming systems and shared community labour.
Expect a rich and layered cup profile with jammy plum sweetness, chocolate brownie richness, and delicate nutty complexity, balanced by the clarity and structure of the fully washed process.
Farm & Processing
This lot is sourced from multiple villages throughout the Nori Kori Valley, accessed via the Aiyura Valley near Kainantu. Coffee is grown at elevations above 1,600 masl along nutrient-rich highland terrain bordering primary forest.
The coffee undergoes a fully washed process, enhancing cup clarity, balance, and the distinct character of the Arusha and Typica varieties. Careful cultivation across smallholder farm plots contributes to a profile defined by sweetness, layered fruit notes, and delicate floral complexity.
Produced at Rio Brilhante, a family-run farm led by Inácio Urban, this coffee reflects decades of quality-driven and sustainable farming. Cherries are handpicked and hand-sorted before undergoing a 36-hour aerobic fermentation. The coffee is then sun-dried on concrete patios for approximately 15 days until ideal moisture levels are reached.
The farm preserves large areas of native forest and uses natural pest control methods, combining environmental responsibility with consistent, high-quality coffee production.
